Melbourne Storm’s NSW Cup side produced a resilient comeback effort but were narrowly defeated 34-28 by the Newcastle Knights in Round 14 at Seabrook Reserve.
After facing an early deficit, Storm responded late in the opening half through Josh Durkin, who darted over from close range to spark momentum for the home side.
Just minutes later, Amaziah Murgha finished off an attacking movement out wide following a break through the middle, reducing the margin to 20-12 going into halftime.
Melbourne carried that momentum into the second half, with K-CI Newton-Whare crashing over in the 51st minute to reduce the visitors lead. Storm continued to build pressure as the match progressed, with Liam Williams producing a composed finish in the corner after quickly reacting to a well weighted attacking kick.
Trent Toelau then gave Melbourne a chance of completing the comeback, powering through multiple defenders from close range to score in the 75th minute and bring Storm within striking distance.
Josh Durkin was influential throughout the afternoon, converting four tries in a strong performance with the boot as Melbourne continued to fight until the final minute.
Despite the result, Storm showed resilience across the second half and pushed the Knights all the way in an entertaining contest.
