The Legacy: Thrill of the Chase

As the 2023 Melbourne Storm squad prepare for the Club’s 23rd run toward ultimate glory, take a look back at Storm’s Finals moments of the past that have created the inspiring legacy our current players will chase over the coming weeks.

There is a moment from Club’s 2017 Grand Final clash with the North Queensland Cowboys living as a fond memory for all players involved in the clash and no, it is not one of their six tries or passion-filled celebrations.

It is the moment, sitting 18-0 over the Cowboys, seven Storm players all joined the race to catch winger Kyle Feldt from putting his team on the board right on the 40-minute mark.

Securing the ball from a bomb, Feldt looked a chance to score before a cloud of purple including, Cooper Cronk, Billy Slater, Cameron Munster, Kenny Bromwich, Tohu Harris, Josh Addo-Carr and Felise Kaufusi descended upon him.

While the men in purple had already scored three tries, it was this act of defence that truly showed the Storm spirit.

Former Captain Cameron Smith recalls the unrelenting push that moment signified with pride.

“It not only symbolises what that team was about that year, but it symbolises what Melbourne Storm are about and who we are, not just as footballers, but as people,” shared Smith.

As well, it's about giving your best effort. It's being at your best. It's given 100% every time you need to.

“Everyone just took it upon themselves that a job needed to be done. So, everyone put their hand up to go and do it.”

Palmed off by Feldt early in the pursuit, Slater agreed the moment summarised the Storm way.

“Everyone's willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. It's a great picture, isn’t it?” he said.

“Nearly half our team were involved in that chase, and that's a pretty good image, and that's how you want your player’s mindsets.

“That's where you want them to put in everything and do whatever it takes.”
