Melbourne fullback Billy Slater on Sunday scored the 172nd try of his first-grade career becoming rugby league's greatest ever try scorer for a single club.

Slater's double against the Eels on Parramatta on Sunday allowed the number one to pass North Sydney legend Ken Irvine who scored 171 tries from 176 games for the Bears between 1958 and 1970.

Slater currently sits third on the all time list of first-grade try scorers behind Irvine (212) and Steve Menzies (180).
