Feeder report: Round 17

As Melbourne Storm endured a bye week, the Club’s feeder teams, Brisbane Tigers and Sunshine Coast Falcons, felt the highs and lows in Round 17 of the Hostplus Cup.

George Jennings continued writing an impressive comeback story Saturday evening as the Brisbane Tigers ran away with a 18-34 win over Western Clydesdale.

Scoring three tries in seven minutes late in the first half, then adding a fourth early in the second – the Storm winger was unstoppable for the men in orange, also going on to top the charts with 224 run metres and three line-breaks.

Jennings was joined by teammates Corey Thompson and Solomona Faataape over the try-line, alongside two conversions from Jonah Pezet as the Tigers put on a dominant performance over the home side to secure their third consecutive victory.

As Clydesdale attempted to keep in the fight with two converted tries in the second half, however Brisbane’s advantage proved too strong to overcome as the Tigers held onto their fourth-place spot on the Hostplus Cup ladder.

Ladder-leaders Souths Logan Magpies put on a show for their home crowd as the Falcons pulled up short with a 34-22 loss at Logan Metro Sports Complex on Saturday night.

Four converted tries in the opening 40 put the home side in a secure position and the Falcons on the back foot, but the Sunshine Coast side would not allow the one-way traffic to continue, finding their groove through Luke Polselli, followed by Jack Howarth charging through in the 64th minute.

Two more tries and three conversions from Tyran Wishart and Sua Fa’alogo followed over the next 20 minutes but it was too little, too late for the visitors, as Souths Logan closed out the 12-point victory.

Both sides will be on the road again next Saturday in Round 18. The Brisbane Tigers will look to continue their winning streak as they take on the Tweed Seagulls, while the Sunshine Coast Falcons face the Northern Pride.
