Sunshine Coast Falcons and Brisbane Tigers produced two more Hostplus Super Cup victories at the weekend despite being without a number of their Storm contracted players.
The second-placed Falcons downed Souths-Logan Magpies 34-18 at Sunshine Coast Stadium with Young Tonumaipea, one of just two Storm players in their line-up, scoring a 56th minute try which virtually secured the two points.
The try was part of a huge afternoon for the Storm centre who had three linebreaks and ran for 245 metres before being sin-binned in the dying stages.
Storm’s Jayden Nikorima started at five-eighth alongside a new halves partner in PNG Kumuls international Kyle Laybutt.
In Brisbane, the Tigers survived a stern test from competition newcomers Western Clydesdales before emerging with a 32-28 win to climb to fourth on the ladder.
Former Storm halfback Ryley Jacks was among the tryscorers in his 100th Cup game for the Tigers, while Storm development player Tristan Powell scored his second try of the season in the 42nd minute.
Marion Seve, Jordan Grant and Joe Chan were the other Melbourne contracted players to line up for the Tigers who looked on the way to a much easier win when they led 20-4 after 25 minutes.
This weekend, the Falcons play the Redcliffe Dolphins (Saturday 5pm) and the Burleigh Bears will host the Tigers (Sunday, 2.10pm).
