Tom Eisenhuth was sitting in an ice bath, deep in the bowels of AAMI Park, getting stick from Storm teammates for his gravelly “Darren Lockyer” voice.
Less than two hours later, the 26-year-old, who waited six years to play his second NRL game, stirred in hospital under sedation with a tube down his throat to prevent it from closing.
What started as a celebration and gleeful banter, following a Round 1 win and Eisenhuth’s return after six years in the rugby league wilderness, turned into a life-threatening medical emergency.
