Junior Male Report: Round 5 & 9

Melbourne Storm’s pathways were in action this weekend with SG Ball side claiming an important victory to secure a top-four finals finish, while Harold Matthews and Jersey Flegg faced tough losses.

Harrold Matthews Cup (U17)

Storm’s U17 side were unable to match the Roosters, going down 44-10 at Seabrook Reserve.

The Roosters started strongly, applying early pressure early despite a length of the field effort from Storm fullback Hunter Stokie in the 12th minute.

Eliapo Levae crossed in the 50th minute for Storm’s second try of the afternoon but despite Melbourne’s efforts, the Roosters were able to maintain their lead throughout the full 60 minutes.

SG Ball Cup (U19)

Melbourne Storm's undefeated SG Ball side produced its best performance of the season on the weekend, prevailing 28-18 victory over an impressive Roosters outfit to finish 2nd on the table.

It was an even start to the contest, with both sides trading tries to see the scores tied at 6-6 going into the interval, with Cruz Dangerfield scoring the Club's first in the 23rd minute.

The back-and-forth nature of the game continued, with four-pointers to Hayden Watson, Joseph Litidamu and Lockyer-Azile Foliola helping Storm poke its nose in front heading down the stretch.

Litidamu then crossed for a second time late into the second with an impressive individual effort to keep Storm ahead, kicking ahead to himself three times before winning the race to the ball to score.

Riley Brannock and Hayden Watson combined well with the boot, converting four tries to help guide Melbourne to its 28-18 victory.

Jersey Flegg Cup (U21)

Storm’s Jersey Flegg side went down 34-26 to the Panthers last Saturday.

The Panthers had a fast start, racing out a 22-0 lead at halftime, putting Storm under early pressure.

Storm responded strongly in the second half, with Dylan Brettle opening the scoring in the 53rd minute before Burnham Salesa and Tyrell Hopkins added further tries, aiding Melbourne’s comeback. Jordan Hamlin and Victory Isaako also crossed late in the content but it wasn’t to be as the Panthers ran out eventual 34-26 winners.

Storm’s SG Ball side will now turn its attention to finals football, with their first match being this Saturday the 11th of April in Sydney against the Roosters.

Storm’s Jersey Flegg side will turn its focus to Round 6, set to battle it out against the Warriors on Gosch’s Paddock on Saturday the 11th of April.
