Junior Female Report: Round 9

Melbourne Storm’s female U17 and U19 sides travelled to Wollongong to face the Steelers in Round 9. The Lisa Fiaola side delivered a dominant performance, while the Tarsha Gale side went down in a tough contest.

Lisa Fiaola Cup (U17)

Storm’s U17 side had an outstanding performance, defeating the Steelers 46-0 to secure their place in the finals.

Melbourne made a fast start with Heather Nasilai crossing in the opening minute, before Kiera Collins added a second try shortly after. The early pressure and momentum continued for Storm as Makerita Seinafolava and Halo Matthews extended the lead.

Seinafolava then crossed for a second time before Harmony Taupau also added to the try tally. Caprice Buskermolen crossed late in the first half to finish off a dominant opening stanza, with Storm boasting a commanding 32-0 lead.

Storm maintained their intensity in the second half, with Kiera Collins and Halo Matthews both securing their second tries of the match to complete the dominant performance.

Tarsha Gale Cup (U19)

Storm’s U19 side went down 32-10 to the Steelers last Saturday in Wollongong.

The Steelers struck early and built momentum throughout the first half to take a 12-4 lead into the break. Gina Aiono was the first to cross for Storm in the 17th minute to keep Storm within reach.

Storm continued to fight in the second half, with Eboni Heurea crossing to keep them in the contest, with Sierra Teo adding the conversion to narrow the margin.

However, the Steelers proved too strong, adding further tries late into the second half to pull away from Storm and secure their win.

Melbourne’s U17 side will now make history as they become the first female Melbourne Storm outfit to feature in Finals. Storm’s post-season campaign will kick off on Saturday the 11th of April in Sydney against the Sharks.
