Junior Male Report: Round 2 & 6

Melbourne Storm’s Harold Matthews and SG Ball outfits faced the Cronulla Sharks at home in Round 6 while its Jersey Flegg side travelled north to verse the Dragons in NSW.

Harold Matthews Cup (U17)

Storm’s U17 side went down 24-10 in their battle against Cronulla on Saturday afternoon. Tupou Tuifua opened the scoring for Melbourne in the 11th minute, with Hunter Stokie adding the conversion to tie scores up.

The Sharks responded strongly to take the lead and go into half time leading 18-6. Devyn Taru crossed early in the second half to keep Storm within reach, however the Sharks were able to capitalise on their opportunities in the second half to secure their win.

SG Ball Cup (U19)

Storm’s SG Ball side delivered one of their strongest performances of the season, defeating the Sharks 50-6.

Melbourne started fast with Joseph Litidamu crossing early and Hayden Watson following closely behind and adding another soon after. With strong offensive efforts, Hayden Watson, and Joseph Litidamu crossed for the second time of the match alongside Latrelle Cordtz, to give Storm a 28-0 lead going into half time.

Storm’s attacking display continued after the intermission, with Melbourne scoring an additional five tries. Zephaniah Faumunia crossed twice, alongside Jayden Matatumua, Wivenshalom Tyrell, and Latrelle Cordtz to pile on the points.

Max Tokava and Watson combined well with the boot, converting 5 tries, helping Melbourne secure their definite win and continue their winning streak going into Round 7.

Jersey Flegg Cup (U21)

In Round 2 against the Dragons, Storm’s Jersey Flegg side was narrowly defeated 30-28 despite a spirited second half comeback.

After a strong opening stanza from Dragons, Alize Clarke scored just before the break to keep his side within reach, Storm trailing 20-6 at halftime.

Alize Clarke then crossed again while Jeremiah Loli, Jordan Hamlin and Victory Isaako also scored, narrowing the Dragons lead. Despite a strong defensive effort that only allowed two Dragons tries in the second half, Storm ultimately fell just short at the death.

Next week the U17 and U19 sides will travel to Sydney to verse the Panthers in Round 7, while the U21 side will also travel to Sydney to battle against the Sharks in Round 3 where they hope to secure their first win.
