Junior Male Report: Round 1 & 5

Melbourne Storm’s male U17 and U19 teams faced the Tigers at Gosch’s Paddock last Saturday for their Round 5 matches, with both teams producing strong performances to secure wins.

Harold Matthews (U17)

Storm’s U17 team recorded their first win of the season with an electrifying 18-16 victory.

Ofa’Benjavani Nau opened the scoring for Storm in the 8th minute, with Hunter Stokie adding the conversion to keep Storm competitive.

The Tigers responded and built momentum to take a 16-6 lead going into half-time, leaving Storm with work to do in the second half.

Storm came to life after the break, showing determination in their defence while also capitalising on their offensive opportunities. Hunter Stokie crossed the line early in the second half before converting his own try to keep Melbourne within reach.

Tupou Tuifua sealed the comeback in the 52nd minute, with another successful conversion from Hunter Stokie lifting Storm to the 18-16 win.

SG Ball Cup (U19)

Storm’s U19 side continued their unbeaten start to 2026, delivering an exciting performance to defeat the the Balmain Tigers 34-20.

Melbourne had a fast start with Zephaniah Faumuina crossing early in the first before Matthew Kereti crossed closer to half-time with Hayden Watson once again adding the conversion.

Hayden Watson also scored a penalty goal before half-time, giving Storm a converted try lead at 14-8 going into the second stanza.

Melbourne continued their attack in the second half with a fast try from Max Tokava before Micah Warena crossed the line in the 44th minute mark and Jett Ryan adding one more late try to extend Melbourne’s lead.

Hayden Watson and Max Tokava combined well with the boot, converting all five tries between them whilst also adding two penalty goals to raise Storm to their 34-20 victory.

Both squads will now turn their focus to Round 6, where they will verse the Cronulla Sharks at Seabrook Reserve in Broadmeadows next weekend.

Jersey Flegg (U21)

Last weekend, Storm’s Jersey Flegg Cup Team hosted their first round of the season against the Eels at Gosch’s Paddock. A Storm outfit boasting plenty of young talent put up a good fight against an experienced Eels side but unfortunately went down 28-18.

Storm worked hard to match the Eel’s momentum in the first half scoring two tries and two conversions, going into the break at a 12-12.

Having stepped up from SG Ball, Frank Howarth and Alize Clarke wasted little time in impressing at the U21 level, both crossing for Melbourne.

The second half saw the Eels pull away despite a Keaton Stutt try in the 60th minute mark that briefly threatened to act as a catalyst for a comeback.

Storm will now turn its attention to Round 2 to face the Dragons in Croom NSW on Saturday 14th March.
