Junior Female Report: Round 5

Last weekend, Melbourne Storm’s U17 and U19 female teams hosted the West Tigers at Seabrook Reserve in Broadmeadows for their Round 5 matches. It was a competitive afternoon for both teams, with the U19s earning a draw while the U17s went down in a closely contested match.

Lisa Fiola Cup (U17)

Storm’s U17 side faced a close battle against the West Tigers trailing by two-points going into half-time before eventually falling short 26-14.
Storm struck first through Anaviela Weatherby in the 20th minute to open the scoring before the West Tigers responded soon after, taking a close 6-4 lead going into half-time.

Storm continued to push in the second half, with Halo Matthews crossing the line twice to keep Melbourne in the contest. Ocean Kaiwai-Rangikauhata added a conversion after Halo Matthews’ second try to reduce the margin.

Despite Storm’s efforts, the West Tigers were able to capitalise on their offensive opportunities in the second half to breakaway and secure the win.

Tarsha Gale Cup (U19)

Storm’s U19 side played an exciting 18-18 draw with the West Tigers.
Melbourne made a strong start, with Moonlight Moala opening the score in the 6th minute before Deandrea Morgan crossed the line for her first try of the match in the 16th minute.

After a tight first half battle, Storm held a narrow advantage 12-8 at half-time.
The West Tigers fought back in the second half to level the scores but Storm continued to match their intensity. Deandrea Morgan’s second try alongside Sierra Teo’s perfect boot that converted all three tries, helped keep Storm in the fight resulting in a 18-18 draw at full-time.

Melbourne Storm’s U17 and U19 teams will now turn their focus to Round 6, where they will both face the Cronulla Sharks at Casey Fields on Saturday the 14th of March.
