Junior Female Report: Round 4

Melbourne Storm’s female U17 and U19 teams travelled to Canberra last weekend for a Round 4 matchup against the Raiders. In a see-sawing affair Storm’s U17s played out a draw while the U19s recorded a loss.

Lisa Fiaola Cup (U17)

Storm’s U17s started the contest brightly, taking barely a minute to strike first and set the tone of the match.

Anaviela Weatherby’s four-pointer in the first minute was quickly followed by Keira Collins, who added two quick tries midway through the first half, putting Storm ahead of the Raiders 12-6 going into half-time.

In the second half, both teams continued to fight for control, with Makerita Seinafolava crossing the line in the 44th minute to increase Storm’s lead.

The Raiders fought back late in the second half to level the scores late in the contest, leaving the match 16-16 at full-time.

Tarsha Gale Cup (U19)

Melbourne’s U19 side faced a close battle against the Raiders, in the end falling 26-14.

Melbourne made a strong start with Toefiliga Lokeni scoring in the 7th minute, followed by a conversion from Katelyn Faifili-Boon, giving Storm an early 6-0 lead.

Later in the first-half, Toefiliga Lokeni crossed the line once more, with Storm holding a narrow advantage 10-8 at the half-time break.

Unfortunately the hosts came out with a strong second half performance, with Canberra gaining momentum and scoring several tries to take the lead.

Eboni Heurea crossed the line late in the contest to keep Melbourne within reach, however Canberra managed to maintain their advantage until full-time.

Melbourne Storm’s female U17 and U19 teams will both be staying home this weekend, set to take on the Wests Tigers at Seabrook Reserve in Broadmeadows.
