Building a Future Beyond Footy

While Grant Anderson continues to make an impact on the field, he’s also laying the foundations for life off the field after rugby league by studying a building qualification with Kangan Institute.

For Grant, the decision to combine study with his playing career was about planning ahead while also finding a healthy outlet away from the game.

“For me, it's being hands on and, building stuff and being able to look at that and be proud of what I built, that’s why I wanted to pursue my building qualification.”

Currently undertaking a Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) CPC40120 through Kangan Institute, Grant has found the flexibility of the program vital to balancing study with the demands of professional rugby league.

Anderson completes his classes each Wednesday night over zoom as he works his way through the course.

“The flexibility with our schedule and the ongoing support over the past couple of years has been really good… if I can't make it due to my schedule, the teacher usually sends over a recording and then I can catch up on my own time on a day off, which has been very good.”

Studying has also provided him with perspective beyond the game.

“It gives me another outlet to explore and helps take my mind off rugby league each week. It’s a way of getting back into the real world.”

The NRL has also recognised his commitment, with Grant recently being named NRL Vocational Player of the Year in 2025, an award to recognise outstanding performance from players who are balancing their playing careers with vocational training or development.

“ I'm pretty stoked that they recognised my hard work and I'm keen to keep going on it.”

When asked what advice he would give to younger players, Grant said, “Rugby league comes to an end one day and you've got to find something that interests you.”

With a promising rugby league career and a clear pathway into the building industry, Grant Anderson is proving the foundations for success can be laid both on and off the field.

Kangan Institute continues to support students in achieving their goals both on and off the field. Learn more about the wide range of courses available here.
