Junior Rep Report: Rounds 1 & 6

Melbourne Storm’s Jersey Flegg, SG Ball and Harold Matthews teams ran out for Round 1 and 6 of their respective junior representative seasons on the weekend.

Harold Matthews

Storm started its double header at home in the best possible fashion, its Harold Matthews side putting on a clinical performance against a travelling Manly Sea Eagles team to prevail 40-6.

Scoring four tries inside the first 20-minutes, Storm never looked like relinquishing its lead, jumping out to 40-0 before the Sea Eagles scored a late consolation try in the dying stages.

Phoenix Woods grabbed a first half double while Waka Hammond scored a try along with his six conversions.

SG Ball

Storm’s SG Ball side went down 20-6 to the Manly Sea Eagles on Saturday, with Storm failing to overcome a 14-point deficit at halftime despite an improved showing in the second half.

Two Sea Eagles tries inside the opening 10-minutes put the hosts on the back foot and Storm’s middle forwards had to work hard to wrestle momentum back in their favour.

A try to Suli Pole midway through the second half gave Storm a glimmer of hope heading in the backend of the contest, only for an Alton Naiyep try in the 55th minute putting to bed any chance of a Storm comeback.

Jersey Flegg

Storm went down 36-14 to the St George Illawarra Dragons in Round 1 of the Jersey Flegg Cup on Sunday.

After an early Dragons try, Storm replied in the best possible fashion, Stanley Huen threading through a grubber for Mitch Jennings to score in the 15th minute.

Trailing 18-4 at halftime, Storm came out after the break and got themselves back within four points thanks to tries to Suliasi Prescott and Preston Conn in the 39th and 45th minute.

That bright patch of play unfortunately would end there with the Dragons wrestling momentum back in their favour and running away with the 36-14 win.

Saturday will see all four Melbourne Storm teams play together at the same precinct for the first time in the club’s history, Storm’s Harold Matthews and SG Ball sides playing on Gosch’s Paddock before the Jersey Flegg and NRL sides will run out on AAMI Park.
