Coates to return from World Cup

Melbourne Storm winger, Xavier Coates, will return from his Rugby League World Cup duties after injuring his hamstring at training with the Papua New Guinea national team.

Coates sustained the injury prior to the Kumuls’ match against Tonga on Wednesday.

"Unfortunately for Xavier, he won’t take part in the rest of the World Cup after injuring his hamstring at training,” Storm General Manager Football, Frank Ponissi, said today.

“We know how proud and excited he was to be selected to play for the Kumuls, but unfortunately the scans show he is unlikely to recover in time to make another appearance.

“Xavier will now return to Australia as soon as possible and prepare himself for the 2023 pre-season.
