Everyone hopes for that one chance to live out a childhood dream, Cameron Smith on the other hand is starting to make a habit of it.

Just when you think Cameron Smith could not take up more space in your purple heart, he goes and kicks a game-winning sideline conversion to lift Storm to a memorable 14-12 victory over the Broncos.

It was a tense moment as he set himself to take his kick but you could sense the AAMI Park crowd was not concerned.

They had every reason to expect their captain to deliver and he did not disappoint.

“Those moments are the reason why you play the game,” Smith said.

“When you’re a kid you pretend you are in the backyard kicking those goals. To be able to do that in a game that matters, you relish those opportunities.

“There was a bit of a swirly breeze there when I was setting it up but I thought I’d just back myself with the way it was blowing at that moment. I was lucky to get that one.”

He has done it too many times for luck to be anywhere near a factor.

That win saw Storm improve to a 3-0 record to start the 2017 season.

They did not have it all their own way though against the Broncos, who twice took the lead and held firm for much of the second half on the back of rock-solid defence.

Melbourne continued to throw everything at Brisbane, finally breaking through with three minutes remaining.

“They gave us plenty of chances in the first half to be scoring points and a lot of good field position, we probably just didn’t take full advantage of that,” Storm coach Craig Bellamy said.

“We probably aren’t quite executing as we’d like, having said that they are a top Club, a top side. I thought it was a pretty high quality game with regards to the defence of both sides.

“With all due respect I thought either team probably could have won it and we got a bit lucky at the end.”
