Billy Slater has showed why he is considered one of the greatest of all time as he mounted a last ditched attempt to be fit for this year’s finals series.

The star fullback had his season cruelly cut sort back in Round 1 courtesy of a shoulder injury that ruled him out for the remainder of 2016.

However Slater attacked his rehabilitation with the champion’s mentality that built him into arguably the greatest fullback to ever play the game.

After six months of tireless work behind closed doors, the Storm star decided to pose the question to the coaching staff about making a shock return this season.

“It was a number of weeks ago now in August, not necessarily for the Grand Final but for the finals series,” Frank Ponissi told SEN 1116’s Hungry for Sport.

“He checked with his surgeon and was feeling great within himself, started training and decided to ask the question then.

“The surgeon gave me a glowing report on how he was going but stopped short of giving him the green light to play in September this year.

“It certainly would have been a nice selection dilemma for Craig Bellamy to have going into a finals series.”

Slater’s return will have to wait but with his hunger and desire as great as ever, his return to the field in 2017 is set to be something special.
