Back to back away matches is never easy but a decision to stay in New South Wales ahead of Saturday evening’s match-up with Manly paid dividends for Storm.

Facing two of the competition’s most difficult road trips within the space of a week, Melbourne eliminated an extra set of flights, opting to stay in Coogee following their Round 23 clash in Canberra before making the trip to Brookvale Oval on Saturday. It was a decision which certainly helped Craig Bellamy’s side, according to the coach.

“The thing I was happy about tonight was that we had a little bit more energy than the last two or three weeks which is something we need to pick up on,” Bellamy said.

Be at AAMI Park when we take on the Broncos, Friday 26 August, 7:30pm.

“Five-day turnarounds on away games aren’t easy but I think staying up here was a real help for us.

“The weather was a plus, the boys could get out go for a coffee, go for a swim. I think that was a real good part of the week – it freshened us up a bit and gave us a bit more energy.”

A strong first half performance set up the victory which secured Storm a top two position on the NRL ladder, however Bellamy says his side still has several areas for improvement after the Sea Eagles worked their way back into the game throughout the second stanza.

“We had pretty good control of the game at half time but we just didn’t complete well enough in the second half,” the coach said when speaking to the media following his side’s victory.

“That’s something that we want to try and do a little bit better.

“We’re probably a little bit disappointed in letting in 18 points as well but you can’t have everything all the time.

“I just thought there was a lot more effort, a lot more energy and that was a good sign.”
