Storm fullback Billy Slater is pushing to play in Friday night's ANZAC Test but has declared he will not play if he is going to be a liability to the side.

Injuring his shoulder in Round 5 against the Warriors, Slater has missed Melbourne's last three matches and is close to returning.

"I'm feeling okay," Slater said in Brisbane on Monday.

Storm take on reigning premiers South Sydney at AAMI Park, Saturday 16 May from 7:30. Get your tickets.

"I've got to get over a few hurdles this week to make myself available to play.

"I'm not going to no whether I'm going to be playing until I go through those fitness tests.

"I'll know more tomorrow afternoon."

The Melbourne and Australian fullback acknowledged if he isn't fit to play his role, he would not turn out for the Kangaroos at Suncorp Stadium.

"I'll put myself in the positions I'm going to find myself in on Friday night (at training this week)," Slater said.

"I'm not going to go out and be a liability for the side, I'll make sure that I'm confident and play my role."
