Introduction to Melbourne Storm

Melbourne Storm is an Australian professional rugby league club playing in the National Rugby League (NRL) competition. It is the only NRL team based in Victoria.

Position Purpose

The Physical Preparation Coach – Speed & Fitness is responsible for planning and executing the pre-season and in season speed and fitness programs for the NRL playing squad to ensure the players are prepared in the best physical condition to perform at the elite level, with the ultimate goal of winning the NRL Premiership.

Key Responsibilities

§  Designing and implementing a specific speed development program that ties in with the philosophy of the Physical Performance team and the football coaches, and requires general technical, as well as individual and position specific qualities of development.

§  Designing and implementing a conditioning program for the NRL Squad which ties in with the training philosophy of the Melbourne Storm.

§  Working closely with all members of the Performance team to develop a Total Football Preparation Program that ensures Melbourne Storm players are best equipped to cope with the demands of the NRL.

§  Assist and implement specific rehabilitation and return to play running programs

§  Assist in the implementation and supervision of all areas of physical and football preparation of the playing group as required.

§  Assist in the implementation of recovery sessions for the NRL playing squad

§  Attending and assisting home game match days when required, as well as assisting with post game recovery.

§  Work closely with football coaching staff to develop speed, agility and power within the playing squad

§  Implement alternate conditioning programs where required, including modified training programs for injured players

§  Coordinate and oversee the use of sessional specialist training service providers, used on a casual basis, to ensure optimal delivery of physical performance programs

§  Develop, implement and coordinate aspects of away game travel, recovery sessions and pre-game preparation for Q-Cup players as required

§  Maintain regular communication with coaches and other relevant staff

Qualifications, Experience and Licences Required

§  Tertiary Qualifications in Sports Science, Human Movements, or similar qualifications

§  ASCA Level 2 qualifications, or the desire to gain these upon employment

§  Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in elite sports, with preferably some experience in football

Please note that all Melbourne Storm staff will need to meet NRL accreditation/registration requirements, which includes National Police Record clearance, before they are appointed to their role.
