Cameron Smith knew it was going to be a big week.

When you are about to break the record for most games played in NRL history it is understandable that people around you would want to make a big deal about it.

True to form Smith attended every single interview, photo opportunity, luncheon and presentation with a smile of gratitude on his face.

He then went out on Saturday and led his side into a home Preliminary Final.

It was far from a normal preparation for the 34-year-old but you certainly would not have known it.

A game-high 42 tackles coupled with a calmness at dummy half that only he possesses, it was a performance befitting the NRL games record holder.

Now that (another) record has been broken and with two weeks until Storm’s next game, the skipper may now get to appreciate what he has accomplished.

“Once I get home tonight, sit back, put my pyjamas and my moccasins on and have a cup of tea with a couple of bikkies, I’ll probably enjoy what has happened here this afternoon,” Smith said yesterday after the game.

“It has been surreal, is really tough to take in the magnitude of the milestone of holding the game’s record.

“It is pretty special so I might just have a little think about that when I get home.”

As intense as the week was, Smith was appreciative of all the accolades that flowed his way.

“It has been a great week, I am extremely proud of the record and am grateful for what the Club and the NRL have done for me,” Smith said.

“There are a lot of things we did this week that we don’t normally do… it was a really special week for myself and my family but at the end of the day it is nice to get a victory.”

Storm will now have a week off before hosting either the Broncos or Panthers in a Preliminary Final at AAMI Park.
