Cameron Smith and Billy Slater will both be assessed during the week after picking up injuries during Saturday night’s 20-16 win over Canberra.

Smith left the field early in the second half and did not return as a precaution, with early signs pointing to a suspected slight pectoral strain.

The 34-year-old said the extent of the injury will become clearer once returns home.

“It is a little bit sore at the moment… I spoke to the doctor and he just thinks it is a slight strain,” Smith said.

“We will get back to Melbourne tomorrow morning, I’ll have some scans and we will go from there.

“I think it was more of a precaution thing. I ran out in the second half to see how it was feeling and it was feeling pretty average so we thought it was best I come off.

“There is still a long way to go in the season so it wasn’t worth the risk to be honest.”

Slater left the field on a stretcher in the 51st minute after receiving a heavy head knock.

The champion fullback gave a ‘thumbs up’ as he was carried off and was able to communicate after the game.

He will be closely monitored by the Club’s medical staff throughout the week.

“He is a bit dazed at the moment,” Craig Bellamy said.

“It was a pretty heavy knock… he is talking but he isn’t feeling too good.

“We will just have to see how he goes throughout the week.”
