Melbourne Storm is pleased to announce retired Collingwood premiership captain Nick Maxwell has been appointed as the Club’s Leadership Development Coach for 2015.
The role will see Maxwell work at the Club one day a week overseeing Storm’s Emerging Leadership program and further developing the off-field preparation and skills of the younger players in the NRL squad. Maxwell will also assist Head Coach Craig Bellamy in working with the senior leadership group.
Maxwell, a veteran of 208 AFL games, has been a friend of Storm’s since he spoke to the team during the 2013 season and shared his inspiring story as he went from an AFL rookie to captain of Collingwood.
Melbourne Storm Football Director Frank Ponissi said the acquisition of Maxwell was important to assist with the development of the Club’s next generation of leaders.
“We are really excited to have Nick as part of Melbourne Storm’s staff. He enjoyed an outstanding career at Collingwood and has a reputation as one the best leaders in sport.
“He understands young men having lead a similar group during his time at Collinwood, particularly during his five years as captain, and will help us grow our next group of Storm leaders.
“Nick’s story of persistence, hard work and selflessness is something we see as important lessons our players will benefit from,” Ponissi said.
Maxwell said he was excited to be part of Melbourne Storm in 2015.
“I’ve always had a lot of respect for the Melbourne Storm as an organisation. To work with Craig, Cameron Smith and their Leadership group, as well as some of the most talented emerging leaders in the game is something I am really looking forward to.”
Maxwell commenced his role with the Club this week as the players returned to pre-season training.
