Crown Resorts has announced that it will host the inaugural ‘Crown Resorts Charity Challenge’. One of the must-see games of the year, the challenge will serve as a fundraiser for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF) and will be contested by the Crown sponsored South Sydney Rabbitohs and Melbourne Storm NRL clubs on Friday 16 May 2014.
Crown Resorts Chief Executive Officer Rowen Craigie, said today “Crown enjoys a strong partnership with both the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Melbourne Storm NRL clubs and we saw this game as a fantastic opportunity to capitalise on our partnerships in a way that benefits the community, and involves our newly created Crown Resorts Foundation. No matter who wins this match, the OCRF will come away with a win and hopefully we can build on this initiative in years to come”.
To kick-off the fundraising, the Crown Resorts Foundation has provided a cheque for $20,000 to the OCRF which will be presented on field prior to kick-off by Crown Resorts Chief Financial Officer, Ken Barton to Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Liz Heliotis, the contribution will have further significance with the fixture launching the NRL’s Women in League Round. The Crown Resorts Foundation has also pledged to provide a further $1,000 per try.
The Crown Resorts Foundation is proud to support the OCRF’s goal to improve the survival of women affected by ovarian cancer and to raise community awareness of ovarian cancer. The Crown Resorts Foundation’s donation will contribute to funding the OCRF researchers desperately searching for a non-invasive early detection test for ovarian cancer. The statistics are clear. If detected and treated early 80-100% of women will survive beyond five years compared with only 20-30% when diagnosed at a late stage. Currently, 80% of women are already in the advanced stages of the disease when diagnosed.

The courage, commitment and passion that NRL players bring to their game mirror the qualities of the many women across Australia and their journey with ovarian cancer. We thank Crown Resorts, the talented players and staff at the Storm and the Rabbitohs, for helping to shine a spotlight on the desperate need to fund the research necessary to find an early detection test for ovarian cancer to save women’s lives. Without at least one healthy ovary, a child will not be born. Research is the only answer”.
To further enhance the initiative, the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Melbourne Storm will also both be hosting OCRF fundraising events to support the inaugural ‘Crown Resorts Charity Challenge’. In addition, all players participating in the ‘Crown Resorts Charity Challenge’ will wear jerseys with the OCRF logo, representing their commitment to the cause. Both teams have also generously offered to donate their signed match jerseys as auction items to help raise further funds for the OCRF.
