Storm to enter Melbourne-based team in 2010 NSW Cup
Tuesday, 4 August 2009

The Melbourne Storm has today announced it will be entering its own team in the New South Wales Cup competition from 2010, thus ending its joint venture partnership with the Central Coast and the New South Wales Country Rugby League (NSWCRL).

The Melbourne Storm NSW Cup team will be based in Melbourne from 2010, and play its home games at Olympic Park.

Storm CEO Brian Waldron is delighted at the prospect of the Storm having its own team in the NSW Premier League.

“We recently advised the New South Wales Country Rugby League of our decision to end our relationship with the Central Coast and submit our own team in the NSW Cup for the 2010 season and beyond,” said Waldron.

“The outstanding development of local Victorian juniors, as seen by the recent success of our SG Ball team, has given us the confidence to focus on the growth of rugby league and rugby league players in our own backyard for the high level competitions we now find ourselves in.

“In 2010, we will have Melbourne-based teams in the Under-18 SG Ball competition, the Under 20 National Youth competition, the New South Wales Cup and the NRL competition.

“We believe the Central Coast Storm was a worthy venture for us, however moving forward we now need to be focussing our resources into Victoria and the Melbourne metropolitan area.”

Given the recent success of Melbourne Storm teams, and the developments of the game in the Victorian market, the timing of a Melbourne-based team in the NSW Cup couldn’t be better.

“This is an extremely significant decision,” Waldron said.

“It is confirmation of the outstanding work the Storm and its Development team has done in growing the game in this market. The fact we are now capable of providing a stand alone team in this competition is a wonderful endorsement for the growth of the game of Rugby League in this market.”

The NRL team has played off in the past three grand finals, winning the ultimate prize in 2007; the SG Ball team played in the 2009 grand final in its inaugural year; and the under-20 team currently sits in equal second spot on the National Youth Competition ladder.

The Storm will also move into its new home from 2010, a $280million world-class purpose built rectangular stadium for rugby league located next door to its current home ground in the Olympic Park precinct.

The 2010 Melbourne Storm Cup team will be made up of first-grade squad players not selected to play in the NRL on any given weekend, along with players selected from the local VRL competition. In addition to the current pathway for local juniors to make their way through the SG Ball and under-20 teams to the NRL, this will provide yet another pathway to the highest level for local rugby league players.

While the addition of the Melbourne Storm NSW Cup team has created plenty of excitement at the club, Waldron is very aware of the outstanding work done by the Central Coast Rugby League , and their understanding in this matter.

“I would like to publicly thank Terry Quinn and the board of the Central Coast Rugby League for what has been a mutually beneficial, and thoroughly enjoyable partnership over the past three seasons,” said Waldron.

“If there is a NSW NRL club looking for an area to base themselves in for the 2010 NSW Premier League and beyond, I encourage them to look at a possible joint venture partnership with the Central Coast.

“A great opportunity has arisen on the Central Coast and I can’t recommend them highly enough for any potential partnership with an NRL club.”

Where will the side play out of? The new stadium, Olympic Park or even Casey Fields all seem possible.

Good news, the Storm need to really give preference to developing local Melb juniors such as Pulou V and Gareth Widdop. Some of the homegrown Vic juniors in the SG Ball side must also be promoted to Toyota Cup like Robbie Kurth, Lucas Grech, Herschel Gideon, Matt Constantinou, and Eddie Faamausili. Local development will lead to long term success on and off the field.

Awesome! This is such great news. Obviously because the young players that look to be coming through from these junior competitions will boost our team in the future. Storm R DA best!

Great news. Does this mean that the Storm wont play away games at the Central Coast? One small point though, the ground wasnt purpose built for NRL - it was built for all sports that play on a rectangular fiels.b

Brilliant news! Rugby league in Melbourne is getting stronger by the year. Hope channel 9 will finally get the message – Melbournians also love the NRL & deserve to watch their games live too (as in NSW & Qld), & not after midnight. C’mon channel 9 – pull your finger out.

Mixed emotions. My girlfriends family lives on the Central Coast and it was great being able to watch the Storm I was up there. I shall miss the Central Coast Storm. All the best in the future. But one thing that could be done to help further the game in Victoria is for 9 to show league at it's proper time slot, not midnight. Show the Sunday NRL Footy Show and Sunday Roast aswel. Let Victorians make up their own mind! That's what needs to be done next! FIX THE COVERAGE!

This is great news. I'm Melbourne born & Bred. It will only help the game in Vic to see someone from this state in the top team. This can only advance the opportunity for this to happen.

Great to see the younger sides taking shape, i am sorry to see the storm leave the Central Coast but everyone has to move on & it is probably time for the storm to do so, but please keep your games coming to the Central Coast it is great to see competitive sides play at Bluetongue Stadium.

Well done Storm. Congratulaions to all the persons who have worked so hard since Melb Storm was started to get to where we are now. Will this now mean that when our Seniors play at home our U20's and Premier Cup side will also.

Excellent news!! It shows that rugby league in Melbourne is prospering , and with the continued success of the U/20 team and SG Ball squad the Storm will be a power in the immediate future. Maybe a name for the Premier League team could be the Lightning??

Credit must go to Jamie Feeney and his NSW Cup side this year - they are going so well and will hopefully make the big GF and take out the 2009 NSW Cup premiership.

I think that it's great the we are introducing a team to the new South Wakes Premier League next year. I thnkt we should apponit a Former Melbourne Stomr Player either Scott Hill CXlint Newton or appont JHamie Feeney from Centrasl Coast Storm as our New South Wales Premier Leauge Coach for next year & beyond.

This is tremendous news for the Storm for 2010 and beyond and it is a credit to the development work that has been completed over recent time by many people. Our CEO has acted wisely with the timing of this historical move.
